Anchorage is a great base. But if you stay in the city the whole time, you’re missing what most people actually come to Alaska for.
The Mat-Su Valley sits about 45 minutes north, and it packs more into a single day than most places manage in a week. Here’s where to start.
Go Ziplining Over a Salmon Creek Canyon
Alaska Zipline Adventure Park runs six lines through the wilderness above Palmer, with heights up to 255 feet and speeds hitting 45 mph. The signature crossing takes you over a salmon creek canyon, which on its own is worth the trip.
It’s not a theme park setup. You’re in the trees, over real terrain, with guides who know the land. Tandem line options are available if you’re going with someone who needs a little more encouragement.
Ride Horses Through the Valley
Sunderland Ranch offers horseback rides across open land backed by the Chugach and Talkeetna ranges. The scenery does most of the talking. Rides are guided and suited to a range of experience levels, so you don’t need to know what you’re doing to enjoy it.
Pan for Gold
Gold panning has been part of Alaska since long before the state was a state. At Sunderland Ranch, you can try it yourself with guidance included. It’s hands-on, it’s a little unpredictable, and kids tend to be completely absorbed by it. [Confirm current gold panning operational status with client.]
Walk a Working Farm
The ranch is a real working property. Farm tours give you a close look at the animals and land that make it run. It’s a slower pace than the zipline, but it fits naturally into a full-day visit, especially for families with younger kids.
Stay the Night and Go Deeper
The lodge at Sunderland Ranch sleeps groups and families. If one day isn’t enough, staying over gives you time to combine experiences without rushing back to Anchorage. Book through Airbnb.
How to Plan Your Day Trip
Most guests drive up from Anchorage. If you’d rather not, reach out and we can help plan a shuttle. It takes one variable out of the day and keeps things easy, especially if you’re traveling with kids or a larger group.
Summer fills up, so locking in a date early is worth doing.
